Road Work on Ward Street and McCarthy Street

GMI Asphalt LLC, the contractor for the Department of Public Works (DPW), will begin roadwork on Thursday , June 12, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The work will take place on the following streets:

  • Ward Street from River Road to Ted Street
  • Ted Street from Ward Street to McCarthy Street
  • McCarthy Street from Ted Street to Pelham Street
  • Pelham Street from McCarthy Street to Ward Street 
  • McCarthy Street from Dead End to River Road 

The project includes adjustments to manholes and catch basins, as well as pavement reclaim and paving. The reconstruction is expected to take approximately +/- 8 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

During this time, these streets will have limited access, and no parking will be allowed within the work zone. Travelers are encouraged to use alternate route and to follow posted detour signs. Drivers should anticipate potential delays and plan accordingly.

Residents will have access to their property at all times during construction.

We understand that construction may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to improve the community’s infrastructure. Please avoid the construction area whenever possible and make necessary adjustments to your plans. Thank you for your understanding.

Road Work on Pine Street

GMI Asphalt LLC, the contractor for the Department of Public Works (DPW), will begin road work on Pine Street , between Bridge Street and Webster Street, starting on Wednesday , June 11, 2025 , between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. 

The project includes adjustments to manholes and catch basins, as well as pavement milling and paving. The reconstruction is expected to take approximately +/- 8 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

During the construction period, the road will be reduced to a single lane for through traffic, and parking will be prohibited during construction hours. Access to key business locations will be maintained throughout the project.

Travelers are encouraged to use Union Street as an alternate route. Please follow posted detour signs and allow extra time for potential delays.

Please plan your activities accordingly and avoid the construction zone if possible. While we aim to minimize disruptions, be prepared for possible delays and limited access to properties in the area.

Roadway Construction Notification - (Various Locations) tentative start date 6/9/25

Sewer Lining Preparation and Installation Notice

The Environmental Protection Division of the Department of Public Works, in coordination with its subcontractor Insituform, will continue sewer main cleaning and CCTV inspections at various locations across the city. This work is part of the preparation phase for the upcoming full-length sewer liner installations.

Tentative Schedule:

Liner installation is expected to begin the week of June 16, 2025.

85 locations throughout the city are included in this project.

Resident & Business Notification:

Initial notices will be distributed one week prior to lining work.

Installation notices will be delivered the day before work begins.

All notices will include contact information for any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to improve the city’s infrastructure.

Roadway Construction Closure- Massabesic St. between So. Porter St. to Mammoth Rd. – tentative start date 6/23/25

The Environmental Protection Division of the Department of Public Works, in conjunction with Contractor Albanese D&S, will begin working on Massabesic St. between So. Porter St. to Mammoth Rd. – tentative start date 6/23/25 to complete drainage installations for Cemetery Brook Crossing at Massabesic St. near the East Side Club.  The work is scheduled to take approximately 2 weeks to complete.  Notices will be distributed to residences and businesses in this area before construction, advising of the work and proposed detour routes.

Roadway Construction Closure- McQuesten St 6/9 - 6/20/25 During the hours 7am to 3pm M-F.

The Environmental Protection Division of the Department of Public Works, in conjunction with Contractor Albanese D&S, will continue excavation work on McQuesten Street, from Second Street to Wentworth Street, to replace the existing sewer main.  Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:00 pm.  Traffic detours will be set up during those hours. Trucks will use Wentworth St. to access Thorp St. to access Second St. No parking signs will also be posted as needed.  Work is expected to take approximately 2 more weeks to complete. 

Road Work on Canal Street / West Auburn Street

GMI Asphalt LLC, the contractor for the Department of Public Works (DPW), will begin road work on Canal Street / West Auburn Street, between Elm Street and Granite Street, starting on Tuesday, May 27, between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. 

The project includes adjustments to manholes and catch basins, as well as pavement milling and paving. The reconstruction is expected to take approximately +/- 3 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

During the construction period, the road will be closed to through traffic, and parking will be prohibited during construction hours. Businesses will still have access to key locations including Market Basket, NBT Bank, and 75 Canal Street residents.

Travelers are encouraged to use Granite Street as an alternate route. Please follow posted detour signs and allow extra time for potential delays.

Road Work on Rockland Ave. and Varney St.

  • Rockland Avenue from College Avenue to Varney Street
  • Sylvester Street from Ingalls Street to Varney Street
  • Worthley Road from Alpine Street to Rockland Avenue
  • Varney Street from Mast Road to Rockland Avenue
