Open a New Food Business

Pre-Construction Phase

Contact Planning and Community Development

  • Check zoning requirements.

Contact the Health Department

  • Submit drawn-to-scale floor plans (digital submission, submit email, or deliver four printed sets).
  • Once Health approves your plans, an inspector from Health will email the approved plans and a Sign-Off Form to the applicant and all city departments. Fire and Planning must also approve these plans.
  • The applicant will be responsible for completing the top portion of the sign-off form and sending it to Planning and Community Development. 
  • Pull required permits from Planning and Community Development (occupancy, construction, electrical, plumbing, heating/mechanical, zoning, signage).
  • Obtain a Business License Application from the City Clerk and begin obtaining signatures from other city departments (on the business license application).

Construction & Final Inspection Phase

  • Complete construction and renovation items.
  • Contact the Fire Department for a final inspection.
  • Contact Planning & Community Development for final inspections.
  • Submit completed business license to the City Clerk
  • Obtain sign-offs from Planning & Community Development, Fire, and City Clerk.
  • Complete the Food Permit Application form approximately 2 weeks from the anticipated opening.
  • Review the Health Checklist to ensure the facility is ready for inspection.
  • Contact the Health Department for a final inspection once ready for operation.

Non-City Agencies

  • Contact the State of New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration for Rooms & Meals tax registration.
  • Contact the NH Liquor Commission if you plan to serve alcohol.
