The City Archives has volunteer opportunities for those who would like to assist with archival projects for preserving and making accessible Manchester's historic records. Possible projects include creating indexes, transcription of handwritten records, scanning, and more. Volunteers work under professional supervision in a friendly and tranquil environment.
Current projects include:
Transcription Project
Assist with the transcription of Manchester's earliest documents, such as the meeting minutes of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen starting in the mid-19th Century. Many early records are handwritten in large ledgers. Enhance access to the content of these records by creating full-text digital transcriptions.
Vital Records Index Project
Assist with data entry tasks to create a digital, searchable index of the city's vital records from information contained on physical index cards.
