The map below highlights the tunnel alignment, including the Launch Trench and Drop Shafts (DS) 1 through 7. Beneath the map, you’ll find descriptions of ongoing activity at each location.

Tunnel 
  • Begin mining operations up to the CSX rail cooridor (approx St. 0+50) underway
Launch Site – Queen City Ave. Bridge
  • Installation of support gantries underway 
  • Delivery of precast concrete tunnel segments to TBM underway
  • Installation of concrete floor slabs and walls of the launch trench completed until full TBM is underground
  • TBM support utilities and systems for TBM operation completed
  • Commissioning of the muck handling system, water treatment plant and slurry plant completed
  • Installation of TBM staff offices and facilities completed
  • Placement of TBM and support gantries into the launch trench completed
  • Installation of push frame and working area for placement of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the launch trench completed
  • Installation of slurry plant for TBM operation completed
  • Support of excavation (SOE) construction completed
  • Excavation of Launch Trench completed
  • Ground improvements beneath the railroad crossing completed
Drop Shaft 1 – Intersection of Brown Ave. And Queen City Ave.
  • Controlled blasting of rock and rock removal to complete the horizontal adit underway
  • Controlled blasting of rock and placement of rock supports completed to bottom depth
  • Installation of vent shaft completed
  • Building demolition completed
  • Support of excavation (SOE) completed
Drop Shaft 2 – Between Union Street and Beech Street
  • Placement of drop tube that will connect the vortex structure to the adit structure underway
  • Placement of concrete for adit structure and de-aeration chamber completed
  • Controlled blasting for rock excavation completed
  • Rock excavation for adits (horizontal tunnels to connect drop shaft to tunnel) completed
  • Support of excavation (SOE) completed
  • Ground improvement work for tunnel completed
Consolidation Drain Pipe - Cilley Rd, S. Willow St, Queen City Ave & Union St
  • 60-inch drain pipe and manhole installations underway
  • Sewer lining work completed
  • Watermain relocation completed
Drop Shaft 3 – Near Somerville St. and Maple St.
  • Preparation for concrete placement of vortex structure underway
  • Placement of drop tube that will connect the vortex structure to the adit structure completed
  • Ground improvements for tunnel comlpeted
  • Controlled blasting for rock excavation completed
  • Support of excavation (SOE) completed
Supplemental Vent 2 - Near Maple St. and Silver St.
  • Preparation for ground improvements completed
  • Installation of vent shaft completed
Drop Shaft 4 – Near Wilson St. and Hayward St.
  • Installation of support of excavation and bracing underway
  • Preparation and pre-drilling for support of excavation (SOE) completed
  • Building demolition completed
  • Removal of site utilities completed
Drop Shaft 5 – Between Taylor St. and Cypress St.
  • Preparation and pre-drilling for support of excavation (SOE) underway
  • Drilling of vent shafts underway
  • Site clearing is completed
  • Site utility preparation is completed
Drop Shaft 6 – On Massabesic across from Elliot Hospital
  • Preparation and pre-drilling for support of excavation (SOE) underway
  • Relocation of utilities for completion of vent shaft and SOE installation underway
  • Drilling and installation of vent shaft underway
  • Site utility preparation completed
  • Building demolition completed
Drop Shaft 7 – On Mammoth Rd. at Rockingham Trail
  • Relocation of utilities for site access underway
  • Site utility preparation completed
Tunnel Outfall Structure - Merrimack River
  • Preparation of coffer-dam installation underway
  • Installation of sheet piles for support of excavation of the outfall structure underway underway
Entrance Box Culvert – On Rockingham Trail
  • Work to commence in 2028  
Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)
  • Begin mining and routine maintenance of TBM underway
  • Connection of TBM support utilities completed
  • Connection of slurry plant and muck handling system to the TBM completed
  • Connection of TBM sections and support gantries completed
  • Delivery of TBM overland to the site completed
  • Delivery of support gantries (gear that follows the TBM into the tunnel) completed
  • Fabrication and shipment from Germany of TBM completed
  • TBM named by students at Hillside Middle School, refer to News and Publications page
