Pandemic Influenza

The next influenza pandemic will potentially have devastating consequences. The Manchester Health Department and its regional partners are thus actively planning for an influenza pandemic to ease the impact it might have on our community.

One aspect of pandemic influenza planning is outlining how
victims would receive community-based medical care in the
event that the area hospitals are overwhelmed. An Acute Care
Center (ACC) facility where such care could be provided has
been identified, and supplies and equipment for the facility
have been purchased. Furthermore, in April 2008, the
Manchester Health Department and Manchester Fire
Department conducted an emergency response drill in
which the ACC was set up.

Anthrax

The Manchester Health Department and its regional partners are participating in a program called the Cities Readiness Initiative that is increasing our capacity to dispense medications during a public health emergency such as an anthrax attack.

Plans for how medications will be dispensed in an emergency are in development. The plans identify facilities in the community that could be used as Point of Dispensing (POD) sites in either small- or large-scale emergencies.
