Mural Program

Manchester - "A City of Murals"

An exciting part of Manchester Arts Commission's outreach is to work with local businesses, oraganizations and individuals to commission murals that showcase our city's historical moments, diversity and creative talent. In turn, this will provide opportunities for residents and visitors to appreciate the work of our city's growing artist community - while directly adding to the economic impact of Arts and Culture within downtown Manchester.

If your company or oraganization would like to add a mural to your location or help sponsor a mural on a city owned property, please contact us.

Manchester Makerspace Mural commissioned by Manchester Arts Commission

Mural commissioned by MAC for Manchester Makerspace

MAC's most recent mural commission in 2016 can be seen and appreciated within our city's Gaslight District at Manchester Makerspace, located at 346 Old Granite Street. Manchester Makerspace contacted MAC to help them attract artists to connect with "makers" at their space. MAC coordinated a submission process for artists to submit mural ideas for Manchester Makerspace's front garage door. Local artist (and previous art commissioner) James Chase was chosen to create the garage door mural, in addition to six window murals above the door. As a result, the urals now greatly add to the "mood" of Old Granite Street and elevates Manchester Makerspace's branding and mission to foster the experience of "making." MAC is presently working to commission in 2017 a new set of murals for Manchester Makerspace's front entrance to represent diversity and which will involve local colleges, high schools and youth in the process.

Cat Alley, located off 836 Elm Street (next to Lala's Hungarian Pastry), features murals by participants in the Majestic Theatre's CATS contest and Manchester volunteers. Artists include Peter Noonan, Dei Xhrist, Emily Drouin, Peg Lipin, and several others. It was organized in part by Anthony Williams during his time as an Art Commissioner.
