The Records of Police Commissions, 1874-1894

Introduction

The records of the police commissions described in this inventory cover the years 1874 to 1894 and total five volumes. They document the appointment to commissions for various offices related to the police force.


Scope and Content

The records of the police commissions consist of two series: Special Police Commissions and Records of Commissions. The pre-printed forms indicate the various offices, who held them and occasionally, resignations or revocations of commissions.

The records are arranged chronologically within the series.

The records were arranged and described by archival assistant, Bonnie Kilby, in December 2000.

The records are open for research without restrictions under the conditions of the Archives access policy. Records may be copied for use in administrative, scholarly or personal research. Researchers are responsible for obtaining copyright permission to use the material from the archivist.

Series Descriptions

Special Police Commissions

Four volumes covering the period 1874 to 1893. They record the name of the officer, date, position and the names of the Mayor, Aldermen, Justice of the Peace and City Clerk. The position named is almost always "Special Police Officer" but occasionally others include Constable, Inspector of Petroleum Oil, Fire Police Officer, Health Officer, Railroad Police Officer, Night Watchman and Police Officer. There is some overlap of positions with the Records of Commissions.

Records of Commissions

This is one volume covering the period 1879 to 1894. Recorded is the name and position of the commissioned person, date and the names of the Mayor and Aldermen, City Clerk and the Justice of the Peace. Positions named include Health Officer, City Marshall, Assistant Marshall, Night Police Officer, Day Police Officer, Captain of Night Watch, Supervisor of Checklists and Elections and Inspector of Petroleum Oil.
