FIRST Lego League - Sports for the Mind
Your FIRST Lego League Team did an outstanding job at their local tournament on Saturday 11/19. They received the First Place Trophy for Core Values and advanced to the state tournament at Central High School on December 3rd. Go Spartans!!! They created a magazine about What Could Go Wrong with the Growing of the Tomato for their Research Presentation. Here is a link to the first issue of Southside's FLL Tomato Digest. We hope you enjoy it. Our 2011 research project question was "What could go wrong with the growing of the tomato?"
Our 2010 research project question was "How is the human respiratory system affected by asthma and how can we help people who have asthma?" Learn more about asthma by viewing our powerpoint.
National Junior Honor Society
(NJHS)
The Southside Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is comprised of students who have achieved academic excellence. These students have also demonstrated Character, Citizenship, Leadership, and Service through involvement with activities both inside and outside of school. Membership is an honor that is recognized throughout the nation.
The selection process begins during the third quarter of the school year.
Seventh and eighth grade students who meet the academic criteria (GPA of 3.5 for the last four consecutive quarters) will receive nomination papers. These will be submitted to the Faculty Committee. Deadlines are strict and failure to meet the required deadlines will be considered when determining selection. In addition, requested information must be completed fully and properly.
Once the Faculty Committee has completed a very careful review
of all nomination papers, selected students are invited to be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.
The Southside Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society seeks to serve the Southside Community and continuously looks for opportunities to do so.
21st Century After School Program
The Manchester School District has been awarded a five year grant from the New Hampshire Department of Education to establish 21st Century Community Learning Centers at nine Manchester schools. The aim of this program is to provide affordable, safe, and secure academic after-school programming that incorporates the arts into a variety of hands-on, high interest activities that complement regular school activities and reinforce the classroom experience. Your child can choose from a number of classes being offered throughout the year. We will have four sessions lasting approximently eight weeks. Students can sign up for as many classes as they wish. Classes however are on a first come, first serve basis and may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Most courses offer limited attendance.
The 21st Century Program has hooked up with Shaw’s Supermarkets for cash. For every receipt we give them they will pay us 1% of the total amount (excluding cigarettes and alcohol). If anyone shops at Shaw’s please donate your receipts to Mrs. Hetzel in room G-13A.
The form for registration is available in the office at Southside Middle School. You can contact Ann Marie Hetzel with any questions you may have at 624-6359. Session 1 starts at the beginning of the school year.
Here is a list of some of the courses being offered throughout the year: Painting, Royal Palace Dance, The Acting Loft, Hook Rug, Scrap Booking, Cooking for Fun, Tennis, Arts & Crafts, Model Making, Bicycle Repair, Homework Club, Flag Football, Gems & Jewels, The Currier Art Gallery, Soccer, Weight Lifting, The Historical Society, Floor Hockey, Reading Enrichments.
