Department Awards
The James Connolly Jr. Award
This award is given to a senior in honor of Mr. James Connolly, Jr. Mr. Connolly was a Social Studies teacher at Central High School from 1970 to 1979. His life came to an abrupt and tragic end as the result of an automobile accident. His picture hangs above the ticket booth in the Practical Arts Building. Mr. Connolly was a beloved teacher, possessing a great sense of humor and an easygoing style. He was a fervent sports enthusiast and coached Central's hockey team.
Xerox Award
The Xerox Award is presented to a student for recognition of outstanding achievement by a high school junior in the area of social studies. The student must demonstrate a combination of excellence in scholarly pursuits as well as leadership in noteworthy extracurricular activities. The recipient of this award becomes eligible for a $10,000 scholarship in the event that he or she matriculates at the University of Rochester.

Graduation from Central requires earning 2.5 credits of Social Studies. These credits are:

  • .5 credits in Economics
  • 1 credit in US History
  • .5 credits in an elective
  • .5 credits in World History Semester 1
