Principal's Message

Dear Weston Families,

Welcome to Weston's Million Word Challenge

By getting involved in your child's reading, you are giving him or her the best opportunity to become a fluent reader.  Your child's ability to read is the best way to ensure that he or she does well in school.  The secret to reading with your child is to make it a warm, loving and enjoyable experience.  Time spent sharing books with your child creates memories that both of you will always treasure.  You do not have to worry about being a reading teacher.  Your role is to support your child's reading and also to be his or her Reading Buddy.

Reading Buddies commit to reading the books a child is reading, talking with him or her about the books, and signing off in the Reading Log when the book is completed.  Reading buddies can be family members or friends.

The books that your child will be reading as part of the  MillionWord Challenge are supposed to be easy to readWhy easy?  These books are to be read for pleasure.  We want children to have fun reading them, to dig into them, and not want to put them down until each book is finished. If children read books that are too difficult , they will not be able to stick with them.  They will be frustrated and will put the books down, unread.  We need your help in making sure that your child is finding books that are easy and fun for him or her to read.

Please provide 20 to 30 minutes of daily quiet, uninterrupted time for your child to read.

Have fun!

Mrs. MacDonald
