Improvement Plan Summary
2011/2012 School Year
Our improvement plan has been developed collaboratively to aid us in helping children achieve their full academic potential. The standards established through the NH Curriculum Frameworks provide the end goal of student learning. Our plan is created through examining student data, reviewing best practices in teaching and tailoring it to meet our needs. Although it is a plan for the school year, it is reviewed monthly for compliance and effectiveness.
Language Arts: Our focus in language arts is to develop students as readers and writers.
Ø A workshop approach to reading and writing is used. Each day a teacher begins instruction through a minilesson, students practice the skill or strategy as well as working in small groups and independently.
Ø Curriculum maps have been developed to focus instruction consistently across and among grades.
Ø Data is analyzed to monitor the progress of students, monitor the implementation of the curriculum and inform instruction.
Ø Genre study will be the unifying element to all skill work and is common to all Manchester schools.
Math: Everyday Math is the core resource for math instruction.
Ø Curriculum maps have been developed to focus on the expectations of the Manchester curriculum and state standards.
Ø Students are asked to show their work in words, numbers and pictures.
Ø Each classroom has incorporated a guided math block into their instructional time. This affords an opportunity to practice or extend thinking on different mathematical concepts.
Ø Math facts are a key! We will encourage their mastery at school and at home.
Differentiation: A focus this year will be on differentiation. The minilesson will be taught, practice opportunities will be provided on level, above level as well as in smaller steps for those students who need extra time or support.
Parents: Parents are welcomed as partners in their child’s learning. Involvement by parents is critical to a child’s success.
Ø A Parent/Family Involvement Committee has been formed. This committee will match volunteers to activities, assist at family activities, do fundraising and provide feedback to the school staff.
The improvement plan has been a year long endeavor designed to provide our students with a high quality education and an environment which encourages learning!
