The mission of School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is to promote optimal physical, emotional, social, and educational development of students using the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) collaborative school health model. The model is designed to motivate and assist students in maintaining and improving their health, preventing disease, and reducing health related behaviors.
Over the past school year, SHAC has been focusing educating students on cancer prevention, mental health, nutrition and physical activity, Red Ribbon Week, and anti-bullying in addition to developing and evaluating any health policies or procedures such as the Food and Wellness Policy. The committee consists of members from organizations such as the Manchester School District, the Manchester Health Department, Makin’ It Happen Coalition, Catholic Medical Center, Elliot Health Systems, the Greater Manchester Mental Health Community, Dartmouth Hitchcock Manchester, students and parents. Meetings are the second Wednesday of each month from 3:15 PM - 4:30 PM. SHAC Steering Committee is the governing body of SHAC. The SHAC Steering Committee meets quarterly to make decisions and discuss SHAC health initiatives, school health policies, and programs. The committee consists of the co-chairs of SHAC, the Superintendent of Schools, an elementary school principal, a middle school principal, and a high school principal, the principal from the Manchester School of Technology, the Director of School Food Services, and the Medical Director of the Manchester Health Department. This committee reports to the School Board as deemed necessary.
