Chief David Mara is proud to announce that the Manchester Police Department has been reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Manchester Police Department received initial accreditation in 1990 and this is the sixth accreditation award for the agency.
Chief Mara and members of the department’s accreditation team received the recognition on March 21, 2009 after appearing before the CALEA Commission Review Committee at a conference in Raleigh, NC. The agency was officially recognized by Executive Director Sylvester Daughtry in a letter congratulating Chief Mara and the Manchester Police Department.
Daughtry wrote “Your agency's reaccreditation represents the satisfactory completion of a continuous process of thorough agency wide self-evaluation, concluded by an exacting outside review by a team of independent assessors."
The Manchester Police Department underwent an on-site assessment December 13-17, 2008. During that assessment all of the department’s policies were reviewed and the agency was in compliance with 402 CALEA standards. The assessment team also spent time speaking to members of the public, local law enforcement agencies and community partners. A final report was submitted to CALEA by the team leader, Andrew Cannady (Retired Captain) of the Greensboro, NC Police Department.
In his final report, Cannady wrote that the "assessors observed a positive work atmosphere, apparent hard work by employees and supervisors who were willing to be leaders. The relationship between and among department components seemed strong and there was tremendous support from the community and from criminal justice partners."
The Manchester Police Department will be accredited for three years and the next review will take place in December of 2011.
