Sediment Sample Analysis
Stevens Pond sediment core samples showed elevated levels of cadmium, chromiun, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel and zinc. All of these metals exceeded the “lowest effects level” and copper and zinc exceeded the “severe effects level” criteria for aquatic organisms. The pesticide DDT constituent, p,p’-DDE also exceed the “lowest effects level” for aquatic organisms. The PAH compound Pyrene also exceeded the “lowest effects level” criteria. These elevated levels of pollutants may be a result of direct highway runoff.
