    Studies:

    Sediment Sample Analysis

Nutts Pond sediment core samples contained high levels of several metals. Arsenic, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, and zinc were found to be exceeding the “severe effects level” criteria for aquatic organisms. The pesticide DDT and its chemical constituent p,p’-DDE were also found to exceed the “lowest effects level” criteria for aquatic organisms. Several Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds were also found in Nutts Pond sediments. Anthracene, Benzo(a)anthracene, Benzo(b)flouranthene, Benzo(k)flouranthene, Benzo(ghi)perylene, Chrysene, Dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, Flouranthene, Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, Phenanthrene, and Pyrene were all found in levels exceeding the “lowest effects level” criteria for aquatic organisms. Considering the large amounts of untreated urban runoff Nutts Pond recieves, these levels of contamination are not unusual.

    Fish Tissue Analysis

Nutts Pond largemouth bass tissue sample analysis found chromium, copper, manganese, selenium, zinc and mercury. None of these metals were found in high enough concentrations to constitute a health risk to humans. No other contaminants tested were found above detectable limits. The fish at Nutts Pond are safe to eat.

Nutts Pond Watershed Pollution Prevention Survey

From July through December 2003, 37 businesses in the Nutts Pond Watershed were visited by UPRP staff as part of a "pollution prevention on-site assessment survey". There are approximately 84 businesses within the Nutts Pond Watershed, and the 37 that were visited were chosen based on thier proximity to Tannery Brook and Nutts Pond.

Most businesses visited were retail establishments and these facilities were assessed on general information such as: if the business was aware that they are in the Nutts Pond Watershed, solid waste/dumpster maintenance, floor drains, stormwater management, used oil and storage of other hazardous materials. Go to Business Survey Form.

Most of the businesses were "clean" businesses, meaning they were retail establishments that did not produce much solid waste and did not deal with any hazardous waste or product storage.

All of the businesses surveyed were written a thank you/follow up letter, recieved a window sticker and given suggestions for those areas that needed improvement.

Thank you to all business operators that participated! Nutts Pond will be better off for it!
