How to get a library card:

If you live, work full-time, attend school, or own property in Manchester, you can easily register for a library card at our Main Library at 405 Pine Street or at our West Branch Community Library at 76 North Main Street. Your Manchester Library card may be used at either location.

To Register for a library card:

Adults who live in Manchester must present a valid photo ID with their current Manchester address. If you have recently moved to Manchester and your photo ID does not reflect your current Manchester address, please bring in your photo ID and one of the following pieces of identification: a bill, checks, car registration, rent receipt or lease with your Manchester address information.

If you work in Manchester more than 30 hours a week, you are eligible to register for a Manchester Library Card. Please bring a valid photo ID and a pay stub or letter from your employer verifying your employment. Business cards may not be used as proof of employment.

Children 5 through 18 years of age are issued a library card with parental/guardian consent. Children under the age of 5 who can sign their first and last names are issued a library card with parental/guardian consent. Both the child and the parent/guardian must sign the child's registration card. The parent/guardian must present a Manchester City Library card or show valid ID as noted above. If your family does not live in Manchester, but your child attends school in Manchester, please bring proof of their current enrollment such as a tuition bill, class schedule, or student ID.

Students attending college in Manchester are eligible for a Manchester City Library card. To apply for a Manchester City Library card, students must bring one of the following proofs that they are currently enrolled at the college; a student ID with a validation sticker, class schedule, or letter from the bursar’s office. College Students must also provide ID showing their home address.

Non Resident cards are issued to people who do not live, work full-time, attend school, or own property in Manchester. There is a $30 per year fee for a non resident card.

Requesting Items:

You can request any item by calling the library's reference desk. You can also request items by searching for them in the online catalog and clicking on the Request Item button. You will then be prompted to enter your library card number and PIN number, and to click on the Request button to confirm your request. If you have forgotten your PIN number or do not have a PIN number, please visit the library's circulation desk to obtain a PIN. To maintain your confidentiality, we cannot provide PIN numbers over the phone.

New Service: You can now place requests on items with a status of "checked in"

Beginning on April 1, 2006, a 6-month trial of a new service will begin, in which you can request items with a status of "checked in". This service is only available through the library's online catalog. Due to limited staffing and storage space, please limit your requests for checked-in items to 5 items. Library staff will pull up to 5 requested items from the shelf and hold them at the circulation desk for you for up to five business days. Please note that it will take a minimum of 24 hours after you request a "checked in" item for the item to be available for you. You will be contacted by phone or email when your requested items are ready.

All items you request must be picked up at the library at which they were requested.

Interlibrary Loan Services:

The Manchester City Library requests books and other library materials from other libraries for Manchester City Library cardholders thorough interlibrary loan. You library card must be in good standing, unexpired, and fine free to place an interlibrary loan request. You can request up to 3 items at one time. Some libraries assess an interlibrary loan fee, and loans from out-of-state libraries incur postage costs. When you place an interlibrary loan request, you will be asked if you are willing to pay a loan fee or postage cost, and the maximum amount you are willing to pay.

Contact the Reference Department to initiate an Interlibrary loan request. We view Interlibrary Loan as a courtesy to our patrons. We depend on the generosity of other libraries throughout the United States to provide materials that are not available at our library. Please keep this in mind and be careful to return ILL materials promptly. Borrowed items will be renewed at the patron's request if permission is granted by the loaning library. There is a $1.00 per day fine for overdue ILL materials.
