EEE-Positive Mosquitoes Found In Manchester

    The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced today (August 15, 2006) a positive test for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in a mosquito pool from Manchester. This is the second mosquito pool in New Hampshire to test positive for the disease this year, after one was found last month in Danville. The type of mosquito that tested positive for the virus in this case was one that bites both birds and mammals, raising the potential risk for human infection.

    "The citizens of Manchester should be aware that EEE is in the community and they should take precaution," said Fred Rusczek, MPH, Public Health Director for Manchester. "With the activity we have seen in EEE over the past two years, this finding is not unexpected. People should still continue going outside, enjoying themselves and getting exercise, just be careful to take preventive measures, like wearing mosquito repellant."

    DHHS and the Manchester Health Department are working with medical providers and local health care agencies so that they can identify symptoms of EEE early and test for the disease in humans.
