Program Goals
swale Digging
Project work at Crystal Lake
Primary Goals of the UPRP:

  • Return the ponds to thier historic uses (such as boating, fishing or swimming).

  • Promote public awareness, education, and stewardship.

  • Reduce pollutant loading and nutrient inputs and improve water quality.

  • Maintain or enhance biological diversity.

  • Provide improved recreational uses at each pond.

In 2002, members of the Manchester Conservation Commission met with the Urban Ponds Restoration Coordinator to discuss pond project "prioritization" within the City. Each of the seven ponds was discussed at length with regards to potential water quality improvements, outreach/education opportunities, recreation opportunities, land preservation opportunities, and other management tasks. The result is a clearly defined set of goals and prioritized projects within each category. Though an attempt will made to implement the most important projects, not all projects will be implemented due to limited resources.

An environmental consulting firm has been contracted to complete designs for several initial projects at Crystal Lake, Dorrs Pond, and Nutts Pond. Projects are currently underway.
